- Can I have a banner advert displayed on www.Sheffield.co.uk ?

- How can I tell if the listing is effective?
-
- Your web-hosting company can make the log files available to you. These usually show where visitors to your site have been referred from, look for sheffield.co.uk in the list of referrers.
- If you have a visitor counter on your web page, see how much it speeds up.
- Again looking at the server logs, see if you are getting more referrals from existing and additional search engines.
- We do not maintain statistics showing the activity generated by individual adverts
- Some other listings sites do provide statistics, why can't you?
-
- We can provide enhanced statistics but we believe the vast majority of small businesses would prefer not to pay the premium we would have to charge.
- We've seen the statistics provided by a "household name" yellow-pages style directory. Not only do they charge ten times as much as us but also their statistics are very misleading. For example they might state over the last month 345 visitors to our directory have searched for your top keyword "driving schools". What they don't tell you is that many of those searches will have been more specific like "driving schools in Burnley" so no chance of new business for a Sheffield driving school. Similarly they might state Your advert has been shown 53 times - what value is that to you if it was one listing on a page full of your competitors adverts or nobody clicked on your advert? Tellingly, in the examples I have seen, the provider doesn't report click statistics.
- Do you provide "link building" service?
-
- No, nor do we knowingly accept links solicited by link builders.
- Link Building is a branch of SEO (search engine optimisation). Their business proposition is that they will provide links to your website from others believing that Google regard large numbers of links from other websites as evidence of the quality of your site. Google is a whole lot smarter than that, the only beneficiaries of link building schemes are the individuals that sell that service. There is no SEO technique that will be a "magic bullet" delivering significantly better Google ranking.
- My site is listed but I never requested it to be
-
We do not require that it is the "owner" of a website who submits a site for inclusion and it is sometimes difficult to establish just who the owner is and who might be regarded as qualified to submit details. Some sites may have been submitted by third parties who regard your site as interesting and useful to a wider audience. Some sites may have been submitted more than a decade ago and whoever requested the link may have moved job or forgotten.
- I didn't ask for a listing and don't want one, please remove it
- Should you prefer not to be listed we will delete your link. To prevent malicious third parties using this to delete competitors websites we need such requests to be sent by post and we will seek confirmation. There is no disadvantage to having a listing. There is little point in having a website if you don't want people for whom it will be useful to visit it.
- Can I recommend a site for free listing on the basis of its quality/importance
-
We would prefer that you suggest to the site owner that they visit sheffield.co.uk and make the request themselves but yes, if there is a site you regard as a worthwhile addition to our listings please suggest it.
- The listing given differs from my submission
-
We have editorial control over submissions. Often we just correct typing mistakes but we also edit lengthy entries.
- Can I submit a site to multiple categories?
-
Yes. Additional listing fees are payable. Ideally these additional links should point to different, specific pages, relevant to the subject of the Category page.
- Can I get a higher position on the listings?
-
Customers paying for a listing are shown before those qualifying for a free entry.
- I would like to change the details of my listing
-
Send us an Email. We review requests with the purpose of preventing third parties invoking unauthorised changes.
- Do you implement any "quality control" over individual listings
-
Yes, we briefly review new additions and reject some categories of website including but not limited to:
- Sites which include any material which might cause offence to sections of our society. (e.g. on grounds of geographical or racial origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, politics, offensive language, depictions in words or images of violent or sexual acts, derogatory remarks relating to persons or organisations).
- Sites promoting what we regard as dubious products or services e.g. "get rich quick" schemes.
- Sites carrying excessive paid-for advertising links.
- Sites with prominent or extensive links to other websites which would not themselves be accepted for listing.
In addition we run an occasional "link checker" to see if any listed sites are no longer active.
Apart from that it is up to you to decide on the credibility of the web-site's offering. These are some factors you should consider:
- Do they include a full postal address
- Do they provide a standard land-line telephone number. i.e. not only a mobile or premium rate or non-geographic number that's any number starting with other than 01 or 02 (except local numbers)
- There is a legal requirement that limited companies include their UK Company Registration number (and VAT number if applicable)
- Some professions require registration with recognised bodies, in most cases these memberships will be referenced on the website and you may be able to visit the website of the professional body to verify the individual's claimed status
- Will having a listing attract more junk mail
-

-
